Tyler Jackson’s pitching performance paired with Reed Rohlman’s offense led No. 3 Clemson to a 7-2 victory over The College of Charleston on Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Tigers will now turn their focus towards a very important three-game weekend series with No. 4 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
After the game the media spoke with head coach Monte Lee, Jackson, Reed Rohlman and Seth Beer.
“We did a lot of really great things tonight,” said Lee. “Got a great start out of Tyler Jackson. Bullpen was very, very good. It was good to get Alex Schnell back out there. He hasn’t been out there since the Florida State weekend. Threw a clean inning and then we kind of split up the last inning just to get some guys on the mound, let them touch the baseball and face some hitters.”
Tyler Jackson threw a complete seven innings giving up eight hits, two runs, and striking out four to get the win. He is now 7-1 on the season. Schnell then came in and pitched a hit-less eighth inning while Owen Griffith, Jeremy Beasley and Ryley Gilliam each pitched one third of the ninth inning, also giving up no hits.
“I’d say it was really big (to go deep) tonight,” Jackson said. “Especially after the past weekend we had with the doubleheader. We used a lot of guys and going into this weekend it will probably be the biggest weekend to this point, outside of Florida State. We really need as many arms as we can have.”
Reed Rohlman continued to stay on fire at the plate going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a solo home run in Tuesday night’s game. When asked if he expects pitchers to pitch him differently going into this weekend’s series Rohlman responded,
“It all depends on the situation. The situation I’m up in. We have (J.B.) Bukauskas coming in on Friday night. He can throw all of his pitches for strikes so I don’t think it really matters how you’re hitting right now because he’s that good of a guy and he trusts all of his stuff.”
Seth Beer who went 2-for-3 Tuesday with an RBI was asked to give his opinion on what Rohlman has done not only at the plate in the games, but also behind the scenes when all eyes are not on him, that has made him so successful recently.
“He’s just enjoying it,” said Beer. “He’s having fun. He’s playing the game like a kid and at the end of the day some of the best hitters in the world, some of the best hitters in the big leagues, you see those guys having fun. Like Miguel Cabrera, smiling, enjoying himself, being loose and easy.”
“At the end of the day I think it’s rubbed off on a lot of the guys,” Beer continued. “We’re out there. We’re enjoying ourselves. We’re having fun.”
The Tigers will travel to Chapel Hill later this week and the first game of the three-game series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday night at Boshamer Stadium.
