Cain: ‘I’m going to be more of a finisher’

Coming off a terrific fall camp, Clemson wide receiver Deon Cain got a chance to speak with the media. Cain spoke on a plethora of topics including his quarterback and his personal growth.

Cain praised newly named starting quarterback Kelly Bryant and said he and Bryant have formed a bond over camp and are working well together.

He also pointed out how valuable it is to face off against the top defense in practice each day.

Question: How do you feel about Kelly Bryant being named the starter?

Cain: “I’m really excited about it. He earned it throughout camp. Everybody has a lot of confidence in him. We are out here every day working on staying consistent. We’re going to keep working hard I’m proud of him.”

Question: What separated him from the other guys?

Cain: “His confidence, he comes to practice every day confident. He’s smart with the ball and his production is going to go up from here.”

Question: You are looked at as a leader now. Have you changed your approach?

Cain: “Yes, I want to get better than last year. Being physical at the line of scrimmage, running crisp routes, and leading my teammates by example because I know if I’m playing well they will follow.”

Question: Are you excited to be done with camp and working towards an opponent?
Cain:
“I’ve been feeling it lately. Feeling the urge to get back out there, get into game week, and get into that flow. Camp was great, I learned a lot, and faced adversity with my teammates. Now we have to put all of the work together.”

Question: Do you feel more prepared to be that go-to guy?
Cain:
“Yes, for sure. I try to go into practice every day being more consistent. I’ve been working on my timing with my quarterbacks and I feel great going into the season.”

Question: Have any of the new receivers impressed you and lived up to the WRU brand?

Cain: “All of our freshmen receivers really impressed me. Amari (Rodgers), Tee (Higgins), T.J. (Chase), even all of the walk-ons are picking up the culture of Wide Receiver U and really bringing it in practice.”

Question: How does Jayson Hopper look?

Cain: “He’s been looking really good and plays the nine with me. He asks a lot of questions, he’s in the meeting rooms with intensity. He’s coming to the field and applying it. I’m really proud of him and the production he gives in practice.”

Question: What did you learn about yourself throughout camp?

Cain: “I’m going to be more of a finisher every play. Throughout camp I had to figure out if I was going to be the guy that comes out and gives it all every play. Am I going to give everything or am I going to be the guy who just comes off the bench? I’m going to give it all hundred percent every play.”

Question: Do you think going against the Clemson secondary every play helps you guys?

Cain: “I can definitely say that. We go against the best defense every day in practice and our secondary is tremendous. We have depth and we give each other work so it’s been good.”
