Tonka Hemingway, a tri-sport standout at Conway (S.C.) High, is part of a family full of athletes. His youngest sister plays basketball, softball and volleyball at Conway, while his eldest sister played basketball at Coker College and currently serves as head coach of the Conway girls’ basketball team.
Hemingway’s brother Junior, meanwhile, is a former Michigan wide receiver who was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2012 NFL draft. He is currently a free agent.
Hemingway says he has learned a lot about football from his older brother, especially when it comes to putting in the work.
“You have to have good work ethic to be successful,” Hemingway told The Clemson Insider.
Hemingway’s hard work is paying off.
The 6-foot-2, 250-pound athlete plays football, basketball and baseball, but his future is on the gridiron. Just a sophomore prospect in the class of 2020, Hemingway already has scholarship offers from Clemson, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Rutgers and South Carolina.
Clemson extended its offer to the in-state defensive end in August, and he appreciates the opportunity he has with the Tigers.
“It means a lot to have an offer from the national champs,” Hemingway said.
Hemingway doesn’t know a lot about Clemson yet, but believes it’s a place where he could be successful.
“From what I’ve heard and seen on TV, I just feel that it’s a good place to have a career for anyone,” he said.
Hemingway has only visited South Carolina so far this season but is looking to get to Clemson and some other schools moving forward.
In nine games this season, Hemingway has 41 tackles, including five tackles for loss, six sacks, one pass defensed and a forced fumble.
He is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 3 strong-side defensive end and No. 31 overall prospect in his class.
