Despite getting a game-high 16 points from guard Shelton Mitchell, Clemson lost its first game of the season Sunday night in Charleston as Temple up ended Clemson, 67-60, in the championship game of the Charleston Classic.
The Owls were led by Shizz Alston, who scored 14 points in the victory at the TD Arena. In all, they had five players score in double digits, including Quinton Rose, who scored 10 points, had 11 rebounds and 4 assists.
Temple (3-0) shot just 37 percent from the field and was outscored by Clemson in the paint 30-16. However, the Tigers turned the basketball over 18 times, including four offensive fouls in the second half.
Temple cashed in on those turnovers by taking a 25-7 advantage with points off turnovers. The Owls turned the ball over just 10 times.
Clemson (4-1) was its worst enemy at times. Time and time again, the Tigers settled for three-pointers instead of trying to get the basketball inside to Eli Thomas. The Clemson center scored the Tigers’ first six points in the first six minutes of the game, and then did not score the rest of the night.
Thomas took just four shots the rest of the night, though he committed just two fouls all night.
Instead of getting the ball inside, Clemson continued to jack up three-pointers. The Tigers were just 7-of-26 from behind the arc, while connecting on 16-of-29 shots from everywhere else on the floor.
Clemson finished the game making 42 percent of its shots despite the poor shooting from three-point range.
The Tigers led for just 1:37 in the game and its biggest lead was three points at 17-14 with 11:15 to play in the first half. Temple led 37-31 at the break.
The Owls increased their lead to as many as 14 points in the second half, which they acquired with 13:05 to play. Clemson rallied back several times, but did not get the lead cut any further than four points as Temple made just enough free throws down the stretch to win their first Charleston Classic.
Besides Mitchell’s 16 points, Marcquise Reed tallied 14 points and had seven rebounds, while Donte Grantham added 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists in a losing effort. Mitchell also had four assists and five rebounds for Clemson.
Thomas finished with six rebounds, while Mark Donnal scored nine points off the bench.
Grantham was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts on the court this past week. Grantham averaged 18.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and shot 65.6 percent (21-for-32) from the floor, including 42.9 percent from three (6-for-14) and 7-for-9 at the foul line.
After playing three games in four days, the Tigers will get the next four days off before returning to the floor on Friday to face Texas Southern with a 3 p.m. tip off time at Littlejohn Coliseum.
