Brownell impressed with how his Tigers beat South Carolina

Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said he was proud of the way his team came out and played against South Carolina Tuesday in a 64-48 victory at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson.

The Tigers (10-1) won their sixth straight game in a night in which they dominated on the defensive end of the court and did not allow the Gamecocks to take the lead all night.

“Good game for our guys,” Brownell said afterward. “Really like a workman-like performance. When you play against, South Carolina, you know it’s going to be physical. I thought our guys matched that intensity level. I thought our ability to make it hard for them to score and not get a bunch of put-backs was a key to the game.

“Guys put their chin straps on. I thought we were prepared on how to guard some things, but guys did a great job at halftime adjusting to one or two things that keep them at bay.”

It was even more impressive considering the Tigers were coming off an emotional win over Florida last Saturday in Sunrise, Fla.

Carolina (8-3) tied the game at 19-19 midway through the first half, but Marcquise Reed hit one of his five three pointers to grab the lead back and the Tigers never trailed again.

Reed finished the game with 25 points, a new career high, and for the third time this season he tallied 20 or more points in game. He also had 22 points in the Tigers’ win over Florida.

The Gamecocks shot just 35.2 percent from the field and were just 2-of-16 from the behind the arch. South Carolina had just 32 points at the 10-minute mark of the second half.

Clemson will play Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday at 3 p.m. in Littlejohn.
