Tigers have staying power with 4-star QB

One of the hottest quarterbacks on the recruiting trail right now is four-star Sam Howell.

Just this month, the class of 2019 prospect has collected offers from Clemson, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Ohio State and Virginia Tech. The Monroe (N.C.) Sun Valley standout now has over 25 offers in total.

Clemson gave Howell its offer in early January and was first among the aforementioned schools to offer. The Tigers then got him on campus again last weekend for their elite junior day.

“My favorite part of the visit was just spending time with the coaches and other recruits,” Howell said. “We probably had the most fun during the photo shoot.”

Howell (6-1, 217) has been to Clemson several times since the summer. He was one of the standout performers at the Dabo Swinney Camp in June, then returned to Clemson for the Auburn and Florida State games last season.

Howell’s mother accompanied him on his latest trip to Tiger Town.

“My mom was the only one who came with me and she really enjoyed it,” Howell said. “She was very impressed with coach Swinney.”

Howell is among the select few quarterbacks in the 2019 class that have received an offer from Clemson.

He spent time with both Dabo Swinney and Brandon Streeter during the junior day visit, and the coaches let him know he’s a top target for the Tigers.

“Coach Swinney and coach Streeter talked a lot about how I am a priority for them and that they will take me whenever I’m ready,” Howell said.

In addition to the schools that have offered in January, Howell lists offers from the likes of Arkansas, Ole Miss, South Carolina, West Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, NC State and many others.

As far as Clemson is concerned, Howell says the Tigers have staying power in his recruitment and will be in the thick of things through the finish line.

“Clemson will always be in the top group of schools throughout my recruiting process,” he said.

Howell is ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 5 pro-style quarterback and the No. 224 overall prospect in the 2019 class.

A three-year starter, Howell has completed 59 percent of his career passes for 10,175 yards and 109 touchdowns against 33 interceptions. As a junior last season, he threw for more than 3,000 yards and 36 touchdowns.
