5-star DE wants to visit Clemson again

One of the top prospects in the country for the class of 2020 hails from Charlotte, N.C.

Providence Day School defensive end Jacolbe Cowan is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1 sophomore prospect in North Carolina and the No. 7 sophomore nationally. He is rated as a five-star per the 247 composite.

Though he still has two years of high school ahead of him, Cowan is already a national recruit with a list of over 20 offers that includes Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State and Tennessee among other prominent programs.

Cowan (6-5, 250) recently spoke with TCI about where things stand early in his recruiting process.

”Right now I’m just trying to take things slow with my recruitment,” he said. “So as far as schools that stand out I don’t really have any favorites.”

While Clemson has yet to throw its hat in the ring for Cowan’s services, the Tigers are certainly interested and an offer figures to come eventually.

Cowan said he recently spoke with Clemson defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall, who was hired as the Tigers’ 10th assistant coach earlier this month.

“I talked with the defensive ends coach last week,” Cowan said. “We basically just talked about staying in touch and how he looked forward to spending some time with me on my next visit.”

Cowan made his first visit to Clemson in March 2017 before returning to campus for the Auburn victory last September.

He hopes to get back to Clemson soon and further his relationship with the coaching staff.

“I do look forward to getting back down to Clemson soon,” Cowan said. “I’m just looking forward to continuing to build a relationship with the staff and seeing what all Clemson has to offer.”

What would an offer from Clemson and the opportunity to play for the Tigers mean to Cowan?

“Clemson is a wonderful school that has been a top-tier football program for a long time,” he said. “A Clemson offer would definitely be a blessing to me.”

In nine games as a sophomore last season, Cowan recorded 37 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, two caused fumbles and a fumble recovery.
