Clemson’s brand continues to grow and grow nationally.
With the addition of 4-star defensive back Mario Goodrich on Wednesday, Clemson signed another top athlete from a state it does not traditionally grab players from. Goodrich became the first signee on record from the state of Missouri to sign with the Tigers.
“That just kind of shows how our brand is stretching out,” Swinney said.
Two years ago, Clemson signed safety Isaiah Simmons from the state of Kansas. In 2017, they inked offensive line Matt Bockhorst from Ohio and in December offensive lineman Jackson Carman, also from Ohio, signed with the Tigers.
“It just shows that our brand is getting stronger and stronger,” Clemson recruiting coordinator Brandon Streeter said. “We are getting guys here and there from different states that are a little bit further away. We had Kansas with Isaiah and couple of other guys and then Missouri this year.”
Clemson also landed this year the No. 1 prospect from the state of Alabama in wide receiver Justyn Ross. The 5-star receiver is just the second No. 1 play from the state of Alabama since 2005 not to sign with the Crimson Tide.
Ross, the No.45 player in the nation by 247Sports, was the sixth No. 1 player from a state the Tigers landed in the 2018 Class – a Clemson record.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence (Georgia), defensive ends Xavier Thomas (Florida) and K.J. Henry (North Carolina), wide receiver Derion Kendrick (South Carolina) and offensive lineman Jackson Carman (Ohio) were rated as the No. 1 players in their respected states as well.
“Getting the No. 1 guy in six different states, I don’t know if anyone else can say that,” Streeter said. “That is strong. It is a tribute to the people here and to the brand of Clemson University. It is exciting. It really is. I’m fired up about it.”
