Gabe DeVoe and the 15th-ranked Clemson Tigers ended their three-game losing streak with a 75-67 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon in Littlejohn Coliseum. DeVoe led the Tigers with 25 points, bouncing back from a rough three-game stretch for him as well. This marked the second time this season that DeVoe went off for 25 points against Georgia Tech, as he also totaled 25 against the Jackets on Jan. 28 in Atlanta.

Going into the game, DeVoe’s recent struggles were apparent in the previous three games. DeVoe has enjoyed a breakout senior season in which he has been lights-out shooting. Averaging just under 14 points a contest, DeVoe has burst onto the scene this season with his top-tier 3-point shooting. Shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc, he has been one of Clemson’s top 3-point threats this season.

In the Tigers’ recent stretch of games, DeVoe fell back down to earth a little. In their last three games prior to Saturday, DeVoe managed to score double-digit points in only one outing, hitting only 7-of-27 shots from the field in the skid. The slump included an especially poor performance in Clemson’s loss to Duke on Feb. 18, when he shot 1-of-10 from the field including 1-of-8 from the 3-point line.

“Guys who play like Gabe, some nights you’re just not going to have it,” Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said. “I’m not worried if he has a game or two where that doesn’t go well. I think that he was shooting at such a high level that some of that just isn’t sustainable.”

His and Clemson’s skid ended Saturday, as DeVoe popped off for 25 and paced the Tigers to victory. DeVoe was very efficient in the game, showing the Clemson fans what they have missed over the past few games.

DeVoe shot the ball with precision, scoring his 25 points on only 13 shots, hitting seven of them. He shot 4-of-7 from 3, hitting the first shot of the game and his first three attempts from behind the arc.

“Coach drew the first play up for me,” DeVoe said. “I was able to knock that first attempt in and really get going offensively. It was huge that even after the struggles, first play of the game coach showed the confidence to give me the ball.

“He believes in me and my teammates believe in me. I want to help the team play with confidence, not let those two or three bad games bother my confidence.”

While DeVoe did his job from the 3-point line, he also got it done in other parts of the game. Particularly in the second half DeVoe was able to help the Tigers through the biggest struggle they had during the game, getting to the paint.

“I thought not only the threes were key, but the aggressive plays to the basket he made in the second half,” Brownell said. “When we weren’t really quite playing well, he really helped our team. I think Gabe was a real catalyst for our team today in terms of being guy that people can look too.”

With the game in his hands, DeVoe was able to perform. His most important shot came late in the second half with 48 seconds left. With the Tigers up by five, DeVoe nailed a deep 3 in isolation to put the Clemson up seven and seal its victory.

“I knew that I was going to have a bigger role this year,” DeVoe said. “With my work ethic and playing with confidence, I feel like I was prepared this season. When the ball came to me I knew I was going to take the shot.”

The Tigers’ next game will take place against No. 25 Florida State on Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Littlejohn Coliseum.
