Trailing by double-digits in the second half, 15th-ranked Clemson clawed its way back and found a way to beat Georgia Tech, 75-67, on Saturday afternoon in Littlejohn Coliseum.

Clemson starting point guard Shelton Mitchell, who returned from a two-game absence due to a head injury suffered against Florida State on Feb. 14, made two free throws to tie the game at 61 with 3:39 remaining. The Tigers then forced a shot-clock violation on the other end, and Marcquise Reed subsequently hit a jumper with just over three minutes left to give Clemson a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Clemson closed out the game on a 17-6 run, and Gabe DeVoe put the exclamation mark on the come-from-behind victory with a 3-pointer that gave the Tigers an eight-point lead with 48 seconds remaining.

DeVoe scored a game-high 25 points for Clemson, shooting at a 7-of-13 clip including 4-of-7 from 3-point range after going 2-of-14 beyond the arc in the last two contests.

Clemson’s win on Senior Day snapped its three-game losing skid and improved the team to 21-7 (10-6 ACC). Georgia Tech fell to 11-18 (4-12).

The Tigers trailed by as many as 11 points on multiple occasions in the second half before fighting their way back late in the game.

“Proud of my team for the way we came back and won today,” Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said. “I don’t think we played our best basketball, but I thought Georgia Tech’s kids played well. We got off to a great start, guys were making shots, and I think maybe we felt like the game was going to be a little bit easier than it turned out to be. …

“But really proud of the way our guys closed the game out. We didn’t have our best stuff today because of the way Georgia Tech competed, and a lot of credit goes to those guys.”

Sophomore guard Josh Okogie netted a team-high 22 points for Georgia Tech, which shot 50 percent from 3-point land (9-of-18).

The Yellow Jackets began the second half on a 7-0 run to go up 44-33 with 18:09 to play in the game.

Georgia Tech finished the first half on a 16-9 run to take a four-point lead entering the break. Okogie and Tadric Jackson combined for 27 of the Yellow Jackets’ 37 first-half points, and Georgia Tech connected on six of its eight 3-point attempts in the first 20 minutes.

DeVoe got the Tigers off to a good start in the contest. The senior guard connected on his first three 3-point tries and scored 11 points in the first eight minutes of the game to help the Tigers to an early 17-7 lead before the Yellow Jackets got things going offensively.

“I thought Gabe was fantastic for us throughout the game,” Brownell said.

Mitchell made 4-of-7 field-goal attempts and finished with 14 points in his return.

“Certainly it was great to have Shelton back,” Brownell said. “I thought he made a big difference. I thought he played with good poise today.”

Reed and Elijah Thomas also scored in double-figures with 13 points apiece.

The Tigers shot 49 percent from the field and 29 percent from beyond the arc. Georgia Tech shot 39 percent from the floor.

The win puts Clemson in sole possession of fourth place in the ACC. Virginia Tech lost to Louisville earlier today. The top four teams get a two-day bye in the ACC Tournament, which will be played from March 6 to March 10 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

“Our guys found a way to win, which is significant this time of year,” Brownell said. “So it was a great win for us, and we’ll try to get ready for the next one.”

Clemson will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts No. 25 Florida State for a 9 p.m. contest in Littlejohn Coliseum.
