On Thursday of this past week, Clemson sent out an offer to Laurel (Miss.) West Jones defensive end Byron Young.

The Clemson Insider caught up with the four-star class of 2019 prospect about his offer from the Tigers.

“Very excited,” Young said. “Very excited.”

“I know that they’re a really good program with really good facilities and coaches,” he added of Clemson, “and they put people in the NFL.”

Young (6-4, 260) found out about the offer while talking on the phone with Clemson defensive line coach Todd Bates. It was the first communication between the two parties.

“He was just catching up with me and telling me all about the school and stuff,” Young said.

Young said he wants to visit Clemson, it’s just a matter of when.

“I’ll try to get up there this summer or next year for a football game,” he said.

Alabama and LSU offered Young in January, joining Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, South Carolina and others on his offer sheet.

As for Clemson, Young said it is high on his list after entering the race.

“Up top,” he said.

Young said he will probably wait to commit until the end of his senior year.

What will Young’s school of choice be getting in him?

“(A player that is) good at run-stopping and getting off the ball, and getting around the edge to get the quarterback,” Young said.

Young feels Georgia, Alabama and LSU are recruiting him the hardest in the early going. He visited Alabama on Saturday and is slated to be at LSU this Saturday.

As a junior in 2017, Young registered 30 tackles, including 22 for loss and 14 sacks.

Young is ranked by ESPN as the No. 12 defensive end and No. 112 overall prospect in the 2019 class.
