GREENVILLE, S.C. — Michigan State built an early 6-0 lead, but No. 6 Clemson stormed back in the fifth inning by bringing 14 batters to the plate and scoring nine.

Carson Spiers came in with the bases loaded in the ninth and got the save in a 9-7 victory at Greenville’s Fluor Field.

Spencer Strider got his first start for the Tigers and it was a short one. The freshman went 1 1/3 innings and gave up five hits, five runs and three earned runs.

Michigan State took control of the game early by scoring three in the first inning, two in the second and one in the third to take a 6-0 lead.

“Nothing was going our way obviously early in the ballgame.  Michigan State just caught fire offensively.  Michigan State swung the bats well and we were down six nothing before you know it,” said coach Lee.

Freshman Holt Jones settled things down for the Tigers on the mound. Jones went 2 1/3 innings and only gave up one hit and no runs.

Clemson (12-1) got its first hit in the fourth inning. Patrick Cromwell walked with one out before Williams hit a double off the green monster in left field.

The Tigers exploded for nine runs in the fifth to take the lead. Logan Davidson singled to right scoring Juston Hawkins. Beer then singled up the middle to score Kyle Wilkie.  PatrickCromwell walked to load the bases before Williams singled to right scoring Davidson.

Jolly then walked to score Beer and Drew Wharton walked scoring Cromwell. Hawkins reached on a fielder’s choice to score Williams. Grayson Byrd hit a sacrifice fly to score Jolly, and then Wilkie singled up the middle to score Wharton.

Davidson singled to score Hawkins for the ninth run. Clemson led 9-6 after five innings.

“We just had one of those innings where the offense got contagious.  We had 13 consecutive quality at bats.  I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that,” said coach Lee.

Michigan State plated one run in the ninth before Spiers came in to get the save.

Clemson opens ACC play with a home series against Georgia Tech starting Friday at 6:30 p.m.
