In an episode of ESPN’s College Football Live this week, ESPN analyst Sam Acho weighed in on the huge ACC showdown at Death Valley this weekend.
Acho was asked what his confidence level is in what he will see from Clemson (2-1, 0-1 ACC) when the Tigers take on No. 4 Florida State (3-0, 1-0) on Saturday.
“I am highly confident in what Clemson is going to do in this game,” said Acho, the former University of Texas and longtime NFL linebacker.
“Why? Because we just heard from an experienced football coach (Dabo Swinney). A coach who has been there and done that. A coach who wasn’t fazed by a few turnovers by his quarterback in Week 1. A coach who relies on his defense.”
Clemson’s defense forced four turnovers (including a pick-six) while allowing 293 yards and two touchdowns in the Tigers’ 48-14 home victory over Florida Atlantic last Saturday.
Clemson’s four takeaways marked its most since the third game of last season, a four-takeaway effort against Louisiana Tech. The Tigers also recorded 10 tackles for loss and two sacks.
Clemson has allowed 19.7 points per game this season and will be going up against an FSU offense that enters Saturday’s game ranked seventh nationally in scoring (47.3 points per game).
“This defense from Clemson last week did what they were supposed to do,” Acho said. “They found ways to find the football. They found ways to get to the end zone from a defensive perspective.
“So now, when you have a team that may be turning it over, a team where your quarterback isn’t playing great, you find the end zone defensively. You slow down this Florida State offense. You exploit some of their weaknesses. Now all of a sudden, this game that many saw as a lopsided matchup becomes a lot more close.”
Clemson hopes to pull off the upset and extend its winning streak against the Seminoles to eight games. Saturday’s game is set to kick off at noon on ABC.
