CLEMSON — There’s a lot of personality in the Clemson Tigers’ running back room. With that comes a lot of great nicknames, but redshirt junior Domonique Thomas might have the best.
The Union College transfer scored his first NCAA touchdown against FAU, which he described as a “great feeling” Wednesday. Over the first three games, he has 11 rushes for 74 yards and the aforementioned touchdown.
For his teammates and Tigers fans, he’s known as “Quadzilla” for his strength and we’ve seen it with his ability to move 700 pounds with ease. During his availability Wednesday, he recalled the story where Dabo Swinney coined him the nickname.
“I think I had been here for about two weeks and I got the All In award from mat drills and Coach Swinney said ‘where’s Quadzilla’ and everybody knew who he was talking about and I knew he was talking about me,” Thomas said.
The namesake drew comparisons to Earl Campbell and Robert Newhouse for Thomas, and he says that his father sends highlights of the former all the time. That’s what he expects out of Thomas as a runner, and that’s a high bar comparing to a former No. 1 overall pick.
While Quadzilla might be his name in Tiger Town, Thomas is a man of many nicknames and he says it’s too many to list. His favorite is one he gained from his uncle, which he’s still not sure of the origin of.
“Snowman, I don’t know why but one of my uncles, he just called me snowman since I was a little kid. He still calls me that,” Thomas said.
Thomas is now an important piece in the Tigers’ stable, and his physicality is well-documented while he’s showcased extra burst in the first three week. Whenever the opportunity presents itself for him, Clemson fans know his name and especially know Quadzilla.
