CLEMSON —Clemson is an angry football team right now.
“They are a pissed off team,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said Tuesday. “You only get twelve opportunities to play, and you work all year for it. You feel like you have missed out on a huge opportunity.”
That opportunity was what the Tigers believed was a chance to play for another national championship. During the preseason, players and Swinney said they felt like they could win a national championship.
However, following last Saturday’s overtime loss to No. 5 Florida State, coupled with its season opening defeat at Duke, Clemson was eliminated from national championship contention four weeks into the season.
“You own it. You look at it, but you press on,” Swinney said.
The Tigers (2-2, 0-2 ACC) have no one to blame but themselves. Turnovers have cost them dearly in losses to Duke and FSU.
Against the Blue Devils, they turned the football over three times, including two times when they had first-and-goal at the one. One of the fumbles was returned all the way back to the Clemson 33 and set up a touchdown that helped extend the Duke lead to two touchdowns.
Clemson had just one turnover against the Seminoles. However, it turned out to be a game-changing-turnover as Kalen DeLoach returned his own forced fumble on a Cade Klubnik sack 56-yards for a touchdown with 31 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Tigers were driving for a two-score lead, instead they found themselves in a 24-24 tie heading into the fourth quarter. FSU eventually won the game in overtime.
“You just get up. What are you going to do about it,” Swinney said. “Let’s see if we can have a good practice. Let’s see if we can go win this game and start going from there. That is what you do.”
The Tigers will try to do just that when they take on a 4-0 Syracuse team this Saturday at noon. The game will be televised on ABC.
