CLEMSON — In Clemson’s 2023 season, many players have stepped up to leadership roles in the face of adversity. Among these players is offensive lineman Mitchell Mayes, who started his second game of the year Saturday vs. Florida State.
Mayes met with the media Monday, discussing the loss and sharing his perspective on the rest of the Tigers’ season.
–The senior was asked why he stayed at Clemson to battle for playing time when he had opportunities to transfer and play immediately. “I just didn’t want to quit. Coach [Dabo] Swinney and Coach [Thomas] Austin gave me an opportunity, and I just wanted to give them everything I had and I think it’s working out for the best. In two or three years, I’ve learned a lot from the guys in front of me helping me.”
–Mayes credited former Clemson offensive lineman Jordan McFadden as a “big brother” figure who consistently pushed him to be ready to make meaningful differences in gametime.
–Mayes noted throughout fall camp he was “cross-training at four [offensive line] positions. I’ve been playing left tackle, left guard, right guard and right tackle.” However, given Walker Parks’ injury, Mayes has predominantly focused on the right guard position since the Charleston Southern game.
–Mayes was critical of his personal performance against Florida State, and he was quick to dismiss any excuses. “Everyone works hard, you know, and everyone does practice every day, so I can’t make excuses. It’s hard but I can get the job done, so I should get it done regardless.”
–Looking ahead to the rest of the Tigers’ season, Mayes thinks both logically and confidently about the upcoming schedule. “I think we just adjust our dreams a little bit and be realistic with ourselves. But we also just try to do the best we can every day. Like, we’re 2-2, but if the best we can be right now is 10-2, why can’t we do that? We just have to keep fighting.”
Mayes and Clemson head to Syracuse on Saturday to potentially win their first conference game of the season. The Orange and Tigers kick off at noon in JMA Wireless Dome.
