Clemson Defense Takes Adversity in Stride

CLEMSON — The Clemson Tigers are traveling to Syracuse to play the 4-0 Syracuse Orange on Saturday.

The Tigers are coming off their second ACC loss in as many tries after a heartbreaking defeat to No. 5 Florida State last week, and it’s veterans like Ruke Orhorhoro who have to rally the team.

“Every loss is an opportunity to learn from. We see what we need to do better, and we are going to take that into this week when we go to Syracuse,” Orhorhoro said. “I mean it’s tough, because who doesn’t want to win?

“You have to dream big when playing a game like this, and just seeing how these guys handle it is so encouraging to me. The way they fought in their effort from kickoff till overtime, it showed us we have all the tools.”

The Clemson defense definitely showed off those tools.

The Tigers (2-2, 0-2 ACC) held FSU to a season-low 311 yards. The Seminoles tallied just 286 yards in regulation and scored just 17 offensive points. They were averaging 47.7 points per game coming in.

FSU ran for just 22 yards, including just one yard in the second half. On paper, Clemson was clearly the better team, but it was the ‘Noles who found a way to win in overtime.

“Things don’t always go the way you want them to go,” Orhorhoro said. “If things went the way I wanted I’d be a superstar point guard in the NBA right now, and half of us wouldn’t be sitting in this room.”

The senior defensive tackle mentioned the adversity the team has gone though, but they immediately bounced back and were grinding on Sunday.

“We always want to find ways to get better – whether that’s taking care of your body or watching film,” he said. “Coming in the next day and seeing a lot of guys here is a good sight to see. You have to take ownership sometimes of what you did wrong or what you could have done better.”

The Tigers hope they are a little bit better at Syracuse on Saturday.
