Phillips says Tigers Need to be Prepared for Shrader

CLEMSON — Clemson safety Jalyn Phillips met with the media earlier this week to discuss Clemson’s loss to the Florida State Seminoles last Saturday.

The fifth-year weighed into the secondary performance, overcoming the Tigers’ second loss of the season, and the impending road game against Syracuse on Saturday.

–A reporter began the interview immediately with the topic of FSU quarterback Jordan Travis, and the statement he made following the game about being “disrespected” by the Clemson defense and their man-coverage. Phillips responded, “We control what we control, we can’t control what he says – we just believe in ourselves and what we put out there.”

–Philips was also asked about how the Tigers compared to the Seminoles in this game. “I feel like we matched up well. It was a great game, we fought all the way until the end. As a fifth year who came back, it’s what you like to see, and it’s all you could ask for. I’m proud of our guys that gave it their all — it just didn’t come with the outcome that we wanted.”

–Phillips elaborated on the team’s necessity to put their loss against the Seminoles behind them and to focus on their next opponent this upcoming week. “It’s difficult being 2-2, but at the end of the day – it’s life, you have to move on. You can’t just sit in the rearview mirror, in the past games.”

–Shifting attention towards the Syracuse Orange, Jalyn talked about his experience in upstate New York, from playing in the JMA Wireless Dome, to even having family from the area. He spoke on the challenges ahead that Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader poses for the Clemson defense. “He likes to use his legs, and throw deep balls, so we have to be prepared for that. We need to really cage him, have him inside the box as much as possible, and not let him get comfortable in his run game.”
