CLEMSON – The depth of the Clemson Tigers is being tested in 2023. With significant injuries at multiple positions, young players are being thrust into key roles in the thick of the season.
Sophomore cornerback Jaedyn Lukus stepped in for the absence of Nate Wiggins, and he delivered a quiet but strong outing against Syracuse. It was a great response after the game-winning touchdown was scored on him right when he had to step in against Florida State.
Lukus now only has a couple starts under his belt, but he’s confident in his ability and it’s paying dividends. Veteran cornerback Sheridan Jones praised Lukus Monday, as he’s seen that evolution first hand.
“He plays with a lot of confidence. He has good trust in his ability. He’s a long, very lengthy corner. Physical, fast and he just goes out there with that mindset that he knows he’s here for a reason. I love Jaedyn” Jones said.
Cornerbacks are generally working against receivers that have more length, but that’s often the opposite with Lukus. At 6-foot-2, he matches that physicality and it’s key for his success.
With just 87 snaps as a freshman, Lukus adjusted quick in 2023 and that quiet performance is something that goes unnoticed at cornerback. When you don’t hear Lukus’ name or any defensive back for that matter, it’s often a good thing because in this case, Syracuse wasn’t testing him.
That touchdown against the Seminoles gave Lukus what Jones called a “war wound” that young players need to grow.
“It gives you more time that you see to really get the edge of the game, the feel of the game and just know what to do and know what not to do in any situation. It comes with time and maturity and he’s picking up pretty well,” Lukus said.
There’s still no exact timetable for Wiggins’ return, but the experience Lukus has is imperative and adds another depth to Mike Reed’s group. Considering the challenge Lukus poses to taller receivers, he can be a matchup nightmare on defense for the Tigers.
