CLEMSON — The Clemson offense did not have a great day in the Tigers’ 17-12 victory over Wake Forest at Memorial Stadium.
Fortunately for Clemson, the defensive line did.
From the outset, the defensive front controlled the line of scrimmage, as they limited Wake Forest to 2.6 yards per carry, while recording eight tackles for loss, four sacks and two turnovers.
A big part was attributed to the elimination of Wake Forest’s strength – its slow mesh play. By applying constant pressure, Clemson was able to throw a wrench in the Demon Deacons’ offensive plan.
Unable to consistently run the football, the weight of the game fell on the arm of quarterback Mitch Griffis. The Tigers had nonstop pressure on him from start to finish.
Griffis was sacked four times for minus-15 yards and completed just 15-of-25 passes for just 137 yards.
Several of Griffis’ passes fluttered to the ground, as he was hit right when he was releasing the football.
Defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro had three tackles and a sack, while freshman defensive tackle Peter Woods and defensive end Justin Mascoll also had three tackles.
Freshman defensive end TJ Parker had three tackles, as well as 1.5 sacks. Defensive end Xavier Thomas had two sacks.
The Tigers will take the next week off, as they get ready to travel to Miami for a big ACC game on Oct. 21.
