Freshman to Have Surgery This Week, Miss Rest of Season

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney told reporters last week that a freshman wide receiver/defensive back, Misun “Tink” Kelley, would eventually need a minor surgery to fix an issue he has dealt with since high school.

Swinney met with the media on Monday and gave an update on Kelley, saying he will have that surgery this week and will be out for the rest of the season.

“We’re going to do (the surgery) this week. I think we’re going to do it on Thursday, and that’ll pretty much shut him down for the season,” Swinney said. “Wish we’d have been able to get him some more playing time, but I’m glad he was able to really get some experience in practicing and getting the reps that he got in our practice the last couple weeks.”

A dynamic two-way player who signed with the Tigers as an athlete in December 2022, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Kelley enrolled at Clemson this summer after helping nearby Daniel High to a 36-game winning streak from 2020-22. He returned a kickoff 14 yards in his collegiate debut vs. Florida Atlantic and then made his offensive debut at Syracuse.

“Again, we’re super excited about him, but we’re going to go ahead and do (the surgery),” Swinney said. “Like I said, that’ll take him out for the year and have him ready to go when January rolls around and we get in the offseason program and not miss anything.”

Kelley scored touchdowns in five different ways as a high school senior. The Shrine Bowl selection finished his prep career with 91 catches for more than 1,300 yards and 16 touchdowns receptions, while tallying 86 tackles with eight interceptions and four pass breakups on defense. He also averaged 26 yards on kickoff returns and 14 on punt returns, finishing his time at Daniel with more than 2,200 all-purpose yards.
