CLEMSON — Clemson’s problems on offense are simple to fix.
At least that’s the way head coach Dabo Swinney described it Monday night during his weekly conference call with the media.
The Tigers, who are off this Saturday, struggled on offense in last Saturday’s win over Wake Forest at Memorial Stadium. After three productive offensive performances in a row against Florida Atlantic, Florida State and Syracuse, the Clemson offense took a step back against the Demon Deacons.
Wake held the Tigers to a season-low 338 total yards. Quarterback Cade Klubnik threw for just 131 yards on 18-of-28 passing. He averaged just 4.7 yards per attempt, while also losing a fumble.
The running game had just 40 yards in the first half, though it did start rolling in the second half.
“This game was a tale of two halves,” Swinney said.
Clemson (4-2, 2-2 ACC) ran for 167 yards in the second half. Running back Will Shipley led the way by rushing for 86 of his 97 yards in the second stanza.
“We have to get eleven guys consistently doing what we need them to do,” Swinney said. “So, we just have to be a little more precise. A little more precision with our execution and consistency in that. Obviously, we have to find a way to eliminate (the turnovers).”
The Tigers had two more turnovers against Wake. Klubnik pulled the ball late in a first-quarter fumble that gave the Deacs a first-and-goal at the Clemson nine. Later on, freshman Tyler Brown muffed a punt at the Clemson 30-yard line.
The Demon Deacons failed to score a single point off the two turnovers.
The turnovers continue to be the same mistakes that cost Clemson in losses to Duke and Florida State. Klubnik also had an exchange issue with Shipley that cost them a potential touchdown against the Blue Devils in the season-opener.
“We have had two massive turnovers in ball handling. One cost us big-time. The other one, it cost us a possession,” Swinney said. “Fortunately, our defense did not give up the points. We have to clean that up, and again, just continue to grow our personnel and just play like we have played these last three games and the last two quarters of this last game.
“We have outgained every single opponent we have played, and we have done a really good job on third down all year. I was proud of the fact we had three trips to the red zone (last week), and we got two touchdowns. I wish we had all three, but that is an area we needed to get better.”
Clemson has a week to work on it before heading to No. 25 Miami on Oct. 21.
