CLEMSON – With the bye week on the docket, we take a look at the future of the Clemson Tigers. At the running back position, it’s one of the points of least concern for many reasons.
The pair of Will Shipley and Phil Mafah are proving to be one of, if not the best tandem at the position in the ACC. Barring anything unexpected, we could see the two back for an extra year. That said, pro football is a foregone conclusion at some point for both, and that should be kept in mind.
Behind those two, it’s a very young group with talent that’s got very limited snaps but showed true potential when their names were called. Jay Haynes specifically displayed rare speed with two touchdowns against Charleston Southern. If there’s any position to worry about, this isn’t the one.

Looking past the current roster, Dabo Swinney put himself in a great position at running back for the next five or so years. David Eziomume and Gideon Davidson are the only running backs he and C.J. Spiller have offered for their classes, and the Tigers have landed both.
Regardless of what happens with the backs currently on Clemson’s roster, there’s insurance and potential moving forward having each in back-to-back classes. Applaud the work the Tigers have done on the recruiting trail at running back. It appears they’re content at the position for the future, and it’s very obvious why.
