Bye Week Generally Bodes Well for Clemson

Clemson welcomes a much-deserved Saturday off before playing at Miami next Saturday at Hard Rock Café in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The Tigers have been banged up with several of their star players needing the extra week off to heal. Wide receiver Antonio Williams missed the last three games with an ankle injury. Cornerback Nate Wiggins (bone bruise) has missed the last two games, while safety Jalyn Phillips injured his left shoulder midway through the first quarter in the win over Wake Forest.

They were also without starting cornerback Sheridan Jones, who suffered a severe headache prior to kickoff last week.

If Clemson (4-2, 2-2 ACC) hopes to stay in the race to the ACC Championship Game or land in a possible New Year’s Six Bowl Game, it needs to get healthy.

“I think the open date is definitely (coming) at a good time. We’ve got good momentum,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said.

The Tigers do have a little momentum. They have won their last two games and four of their last five since a season-opening loss at Duke. Their lone loss during the five-game stretch came in overtime against No. 4 Florida State, a game in which they missed a field goal with 1:45 to play in regulation that would have won the game.

“This (bye week) is an opportunity to get ourselves healthy. Hopefully by the time we get to the Miami game, this will be as healthy as we’ve been in a long time at this stage of the season,” Swinney said. “We’ve obviously got two starters out for the year in Cole Turner and Walker Parks, but they’ve pretty much been out since the first game.

“So, everybody else that’s been banged up or whatever, and guys that’s got a lot of things going on after six games and a whole camp to go with it, hopefully, we will have all hands-on deck as we get back in it after these couple weeks.”

Bye weeks have generally been productive for Clemson. The Tigers are 16-3 all-time under Swinney following a bye week.

Prior to last year’s loss at Notre Dame, Clemson won 10 straight games following a week off during the regular season. The Tigers have posted a 10-1 record at home following an open week, and have won nine straight in those situations, while they are 6-2 in road games.

Clemson is 3-2 vs. ranked opponents following a bye week. The Hurricanes, who play at No. 12 North Carolina tonight, are currently ranked No. 25.
