Trevor Lawrence met with the media on Tuesday afternoon following the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice and gave the latest on how he’s doing after suffering a knee injury in Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.
The former Clemson quarterback told reporters he’s optimistic he will be able to play in the Jaguars’ road game against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night.
“I feel a lot better today than I would’ve thought, so I like how I’m progressing, and I’m going to do everything I can to be out there on Thursday,” Lawrence said.
Lawrence sustained the injury late in Sunday’s contest when he twisted his left knee while being sacked in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Lawrence underwent an MRI on Monday and is believed to have avoided a major injury, and Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson told the media Monday that Lawrence was day-to-day.
Lawrence was on the practice field Tuesday doing limited work with a brace on his left knee, and told reporters he’s just “trying to be smart” about the injury.
“I’m trying to protect it as long as I can and just trying to take care of it and try to put me in the best position to be able to play on Thursday,” he said. “I’ve been working out and trying to strengthen everything else and keep my body in good shape and all that, so doing everything I can to be in position to play, and we’ll just see how it progresses the next couple days.”
Lawrence went 20-of-30 passing for 181 yards and threw for two touchdowns with an interception in Sunday’s game against the Colts.
For the season, the 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick has completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,439 yards and seven touchdowns with three interceptions through six games.
Lawrence noted that he hasn’t missed a game in his NFL career to this point and taking the field each week is something he prides himself on.
“Obviously I’m only in my third year, but I take a lot of pride in that, in being available and being there and being able to play and compete every week,” Lawrence said. “I think that’s something that I take a lot of pride in. So, we’re not at that point yet. We’ve got a couple more days and we’re going to see how the rest of the week plays out. But definitely is something that means a lot to me is one, being out there, but also knowing I can put a good performance out there for my team, too, because that doesn’t help anyone if I can’t. So, you’ve got to ask that question as well.”
Sunday’s game between the Jaguars (4-2) and Saints (3-3) is set for an 8:15 p.m. kickoff at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
