Swinney Asked How Much Leeway Riley Has with Playbook, Play-Calling

How much leeway has Dabo Swinney given his offensive coordinator, Garrett Riley, with the playbook and play-calling?

Clemson’s head coach was asked that question Monday night during his weekly radio call-in show.

“Oh, 100 percent,” Swinney said. “He’s come in, and it’s been a lot of fun since he got here. Of course, anytime you have new people, you’ve got to get everybody on the same page. But he’s brought, as we say, the ‘dirt raid,’ and it was a very easy transition.”

Swinney added “the biggest thing was probably the terminology that we changed” from that which Riley previously used.

“Because you want him to be comfortable with being able to call things,” Swinney said. “There were a few things that we kept that he liked from a terminology standpoint, but it’s got to be able to flow off his mouth quickly, and so, easy to transition with the coaches there. But he’s done a great job of installing it and teaching it.”

Swinney reiterated that turnovers have plagued Clemson (4-2, 2-2 ACC), but he believes the Tigers will “continue to get better and better” on the offensive side of the ball with Riley calling the shots.

“I hate we’ve had the turnovers that we’ve had, because that’s the only reason we’re not undefeated right now,” Swinney said. “It is what it is and it’s disappointing and it’s affected some things. But we’re grinding through it. We’ve got a quarterback that’s blossoming that he loves, and we’ll continue to get better and better for sure as we move through the process with Garrett.”
