CLEMSON — When watching last week’s game against North Carolina, it appeared Miami likes to bring more pressure under first-year defensive coordinator Lance Guidry than in past seasons.
The Hurricanes, who will host Clemson Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami-Gardens, Fla, racked up five sacks on UNC quarterback Drake Maye, including four in the first half.
However, Miami is not doing anything different from a pressure standpoint than it did last season under Kevin Steele, who is now at Alabama.
“They pressure, but not a huge pressure team,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “I don’t remember exactly from last year what the percentages were.”
Last year, the Hurricanes finished fifth in the ACC with 37 sacks, averaging 3.08 per games. This year, they have 17 sacks thus far and are averaging 2.83 per game.
Miam’s five sacks against the Tar Heels last week were their most this season.
“They are really good up front. They’re deep,” Swinney said. “They are good at backer. Most of their pressure has been situational, as opposed to kind of throughout.
“When you get down in the red zone, they are going to light you up for sure. Not quite as much pressure as you might think.”
The reason Miami (4-2, 0-2 ACC) has not had to is because it gets pressure with its front four.
The Hurricanes rank second in the ACC behind Clemson’s defense in rushing yards allowed, yielding just 87.7 yards per outing. This has forced teams into a lot of third-and-long situations, allowing Miami to just use its defensive front to get after opposing quarterbacks.
“They do not have to (bring pressure) because they can cover and they can get pressure with that front they got,” Swinney said.
The Tigers have allowed just nine sacks this year, which ranks tied for fifth in the ACC.
Clemson (4-2, 2-2 ACC) will kick off against Miami at 8 p.m. They game will be televised by the ACCN.
