Freshman Linebacker Learning from Vets, Ready for His Moment

CLEMSON – For a freshman linebacker trying to learn, Clemson has spoiled Jamal Anderson with the pair of Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Barrett Carter as mentors. Coming out of high school, Anderson knew he likely wouldn’t see a ton of playing time as a freshman, but it’s still a massive year for him.

With All-ACC players ahead of him, he’s soaking up all the information he can and he’s still had the opportunity to take the field on defense. All three of his tackles on the season came against Florida Atlantic, but he’s proved himself as a special teams contributor.

Carter and Trotter have both taken Anderson under their wing and he says it’s been crucial for him, but it goes beyond football.

“Not only on the field, but also off the field. They’re both two great dudes that I can always spend some time around and just learn from, and then obviously [Wade] Woodaz as well, similar body type. Just definitely learning from those guys and just constantly listening,” Anderson said.

What’s key about mentioning Woodaz is that will likely be his running mate in 2024 if the star pair of linebackers decide to leave for the NFL. It’s now or never for Anderson to learn because it’s possible he’s slingshot into the starting role next season.

Anderson is well aware of this and he’s making the most of every moment with the veterans. When his time comes, the freshman linebacker is prepared and getting better every day.

“Just getting better. I just want to improve on things that my coaches see and things I see in myself from footwork to just learning more about the game,” Anderson said. “Constantly staying around these older guys, especially while they’re here. Just learning but really just trusting the process, listening to my coaches and just continuing to develop every day, get 100% better.”
