CLEMSON — Clemson tight end Sage Ennis talked with media earlier this week following the Tigers’ bye week.
The junior broke down his role in the offense, talked about offensive coordinator Garrett Riley’s coaching style, as well as gave his input on Cade Klubnik’s growth as a quarterback and as a leader.
–Ennis was asked about Klubnik’s growth since the Orange Bowl last December. “If there’s going to be a finger to point it’s probably going to be at him, but to be in that leadership position and to be humble, I think that shows the growth that he’s made as a player, as a leader, and as a person.”
–Riley’s message to the tight ends has been to “play big.” Ennis elaborated on this tactic, mentioning that using his skill set to his advantage is key to being an effective tight end in this offense. “If you’re blocking tight end then you have the skill to use your length and size to your advantage.”
–In the tight end room with Ennis is junior Jake Briningstool, which creates competition for playing time. Ennis tends to forget, due to his friendship with Briningstool, that they are competing at times. “There’s just so much of a love, and a care, and a passion for one another that you kind of put that aside and you really want to see each other succeed.”
–Under Riley’s offense, the tight end position has been challenged to become more versatile, Ennis responded, “Everybody in the room should be an all-around tight end. I think the offense has been a catalyst for this – because we’ve been challenged and asked to do more.”
Clemson will play at Miami on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. and will be televised on the ACCN.
