Swinney Asked if Mafah Might Be Better Option at Goal Line

CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked about using the bigger back Mafah when the Tigers have the ball near the goal line and said fans could see anyone get the football the next time the Tigers are at the goal line this season.

Scoring from the one-yard line has been a difficult issue for Clemson’s offense this season. The Tigers failed to score twice against Miami last Saturday after moving the ball to the one-yard line.

Running back Will Shipley fumbled going into the end zone and lost the ball in the first quarter and then quarterback Cade Klubnik went rogue on the fourth-and-one call in the second overtime to end the game.

Clemson also failed to score after getting to the one-yard line twice in its loss to Duke. Running back Phil Mafah lost the ball in that game at the one-yard line, and Klubnik also lost a fumble.

“You could see anybody,” Swinney said when asked if there is a chance you can see Mafah on the goal line because he is a little bit bigger guy. “That does not have anything to do with it, just hang on to the ball. I will take Shipley. I will take Mafah, I will take either one of them. I have no problem with either one of those guys.

“Phil fumbled on the goal line too. It went seventy. We have done that too.”

Clemson (4-3, 2-3 ACC) will try to get things turned around on Saturday when it visits NC State for a 2 p.m. kickoff in Raleigh, N.C.
