Dabo Swinney has mentioned multiple times during his weekly radio show that he believes “the foundational pieces to the next championship at Clemson are on this (year’s) team.”
During his weekly press conference on Tuesday, the Tigers’ head coach was asked about that statement and what it is, from his experience – amid the adversity Clemson (4-3, 2-3 ACC) is going through right now – that tells him that is the case.
“The maturity and the leadership of the young guys on this team,” answered Swinney, who has led Clemson to four national championship game appearances and a pair of national titles in 2016 and 2018.
“This is a good group. It’s a really special group of young people that just have the right mindset, the right maturity. I can see it coming. I can see there’s a lot of great moments ahead with the guys on this roster.”
This will mark the third straight season that Clemson has missed the College Football Playoff following six straight playoff berths from 2015-2020.
Swinney added that his “heart hurts” for the players on his team who are moving on after this season and won’t get another opportunity to win a championship “because they deserve it and they work so hard.”
“But that’s football – it’s three phases, it’s 11 guys, and you’ve got to get it done as a team and you’re all in it together,” Swinney said. “And these guys have stayed together. That’s been encouraging. It’s been really good leadership from that standpoint.”
Swinney is confident in what he called a “good nucleus” of players on his roster and what the future holds for them and his program.
“We’ve got guys on this team that – some y’all already have seen, some you haven’t seen yet – that it’s exciting,” Swinney said. “I mean, we’ve got a good nucleus of guys that I think are going to be some of the best leaders that we’ve had come through this program when it’s all said and done. I’m excited about that.”
Asked who some of those players are specifically, Swinney said he really likes “the foundation” in place with the last few signing classes, as well as the 2024 recruiting class that currently ranks 15th nationally per both 247Sports and the 247Sports Composite.
“That whole freshman class, first of all, I think is special. A special group,” Swinney said of the Tigers’ 2023 class. “I think Cade (Klubnik)’s group is a really special group, that second-year group. Really special top to bottom. I think we’ve signed a lot of great players. We’ve got a great group in that junior group with Barrett (Carter) and Jeremiah (Trotter), (Andrew) Mukuba, Beaux (Collins) – that’s a great group of guys – Brinny (Jake Briningstool). I mean, there’s some great guys in that group as well – Marcus Tate. And we’ve got another great recruiting class coming in.
“So, I just really like the foundation that we have. But it’s a lot of these young guys that we’ve hit on, and it’s easy to see that. And again, some of them y’all have seen already, and others you will see in due time. But the maturity, just the mentality that they approach football with is encouraging.”
