Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney will again attempt to pass College Football Hall of Famer Frank Howard for sole possession of Clemson’s all-time head coaching wins record on Saturday, Oct. 28, when his Tigers face the NC State Wolfpack. Kickoff at CarterFinley Stadium in Raleigh, N.C., is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
Saturday’s contest will feature two head coaches each attempting to rewrite his respective school’s record book. While Swinney will attempt to earn his 166th career victory as head coach of the Tigers to pass Howard for sole possession of the most career head coaching wins at Clemson, conversely, NC State Head Coach Dave Doeren (76) enters the game one victory shy of tying Earle Edwards (77) as the winningest coach in Wolfpack history.
Swinney is 8-1 all-time against Doeren with all meetings coming during Doeren’s tenure at NC State. Presently, Doeren is one of only two head coaches to be defeated by Swinney eight times, joining Wake Forest’s
Dave Clawson, whom Swinney defeated for the 10th time earlier this month.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEK
– Head Coach Dabo Swinney attempting to earn his 166th career win to pass College Football Hall of Famer Frank Howard (165 from 1940-69) for sole possession of the Clemson record for career head coaching wins.
– Swinney attempting to match the career win total of College Football Hall of Famer Red Blaik, who won 166 games at Dartmouth and Army from 1934-58. Swinney’s .797 win percentage is already ahead of Blaik’s .759.
– Clemson attempting to improve to 34-8 in games following a loss under Swinney, including season openers following a loss in the previous season finale.
– Clemson entering the game having not lost back-toback games in the same season since November 2011, the nation’s longest such streak.
– Clemson entering the game having not lost games to ACC opponents in consecutive weeks for more than 13 calendar years. The Tigers’ last time losing in ACC play in back-to-back weeks came on Oct. 2 and Oct. 9 of 2010
against Miami (Fla.) and North Carolina in Swinney’s second full season. Clemson’s current freshman class was in kindergarten at that time.
– Clemson attempting to improve to 61-29-1 all-time against NC State. NC State is one of three programs against which Clemson has won at least 60 games alltime (South Carolina, 72; Wake Forest, 71).
– Clemson seeking its 17th win in a 19-game span in its series with NC State. Clemson’s eight-game winning streak from 2012-19 was the longest winning streak by either team in series history
SERIES HISTORY VS. NC STATE
Clemson has a 60-29-1 lead in the all-time series against NC State, including a 27-11 home record against the Wolfpack with a win in Death Valley last season.
Clemson has won the nine of the last 10 games in the series and 16 of the last 18. The series dates to 1899 when Clemson was victorious, 24-0, in a game played in Rock Hill, S.C. That was just the fourth year of Clemson football and the 16th game in the school’s history. The teams played each other every
year since 1971 until 2020, when the ACC did not place NC State on Clemson’s adjusted schedule amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to a double-overtime road loss in Raleigh in 2021, Clemson’s eight consecutive victories against NC State from 2012-19 represented the longest winning streak by either team in the all-time series, surpassing Clemson’s seven-game streak from 2004-10. NC State’s longest winning streak in the series is six from 1971-76.
NC State was Clemson’s nemesis from 1986-88. The Tigers won the ACC Championship each year under Danny Ford, but never beat the Pack in the process, losing all three seasons. It was Clemson’s only ACC loss in each of
those years.
