Swinney Gives Sunday Injury Update on Shipley

Dabo Swinney held his Zoom conference call with the media on Sunday evening following Clemson’s 24-17 loss at NC State on Saturday.

The Tigers’ head coach gave the latest injury update on Will Shipley, who suffered an apparent upper-body injury on a scary collision about halfway through the second quarter when he was hit at the 1-yard line following an 11-yard catch and run.

The All-ACC running back stayed on the ground for several minutes as he was checked out by trainers before walking off the field under his own power. He did not return to the game.

Following the game, Swinney said he wasn’t sure how Shipley was doing and he believed some X-rays were done on his neck, but Swinney hadn’t gotten any results on those. A Clemson spokesperson said Shipley was evaluated on-site and did not have to be transported off-site for evaluation.

On Sunday, Swinney gave the latest on Shipley’s injury, saying the Tigers got “good news on him.”

Swinney said Shipley is in concussion protocol and “was doing good today.”

“The bigger concern was they were worried about his neck scans, but all of that came back normal. So, that was a real positive from his injury standpoint,” Swinney said.

Swinney said they’ll just have to wait and see as far as Shipley’s availability.

“There’s a protocol to that stuff, so I don’t ever know how that’s going to go, where he is, how they rate all that stuff,” Swinney said. “But just happy that everything checked out well with his neck.”

A junior, Shipley had 21 yards on six carries and two catches for 20 yards prior to leaving the game.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pounder ranks seventh in the ACC this season with 515 rushing yards. He’s averaging 4.6 yards per carry and has three rushing touchdowns to go with 20 receptions for 120 yards and two more scores through the air.
