CLEMSON — Dabo Swinney may not have all the answers on why his Clemson team is 4-4 through the first eight games of the 2023 season. However, he does have an answer for the Tigers’ offensive struggles.
“Nobody is good enough. Nothing we are doing is good enough right now,” Clemson’s head coach said during Sunday’s media call.
The Tigers (4-4, 2-4 ACC) have not played well the last several weeks. After struggling to beat Wake Forest at home on Oct. 7, they followed with back-to-back losses to Miami and NC State.
The common theme in both of those games was the Tigers’ lack of offense. Clemson has now played three straight games of scoring just 17 points in regulation.
Clemson managed 363 yards of offense in the NC State game, but they ran for just 101, the second straight week the Tigers failed to run the football with any consistency. They ran for just 31 yards in their double-overtime loss at Miami on Oct. 21.
Quarterback Cade Klubnik completed 33 of 50 passes for 263 yards with two interceptions against the Wolfpack. He averaged just 5.2 yards per attempt. He also had one of his passes tipped in the air and intercepted by linebacker Payton Wilson, who returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.
The Clemson offense has now allowed three touchdowns off turnovers.
“We are not coaching good enough, we are not doing anything good enough, especially offensively,” Swinney said.
Though Swinney is not happy with the play of his offense, he seems satisfied with the job offensive coordinator Garrett Riley has done to this point.
“Garrett will get them going. We’re missing some critical plays that are there that need to be made, whether it is the quarterback or something else. Nobody is doing anything good enough right now. We have been inconsistent. We need to improve in all areas.”
Clemson will try to get back on track Saturday when it hosts Notre Dame for a Noon kickoff at Memorial Stadium. It will mark the Tigers’ first game back in Clemson since the Wake Forest game.
The Notre Dame at Clemson game will be televised by ABC.
