Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney had plenty to say during his weekly press conference Tuesday, including some comments about overly critical people who “attack” players.
Swinney summed it up by saying “it’s just sad” that has become accepted in today’s society.
“It’s disappointing when we attack these kids,” Swinney said. “These people that sit behind these microphones and these things, and they get off by attacking people, and we’ve just made that acceptable in our world. It’s sad, man. It’s just sad. We’ve made it acceptable and OK to just attack people. It’s sad. It really is.”
Swinney doesn’t care whether it’s college athletes who are compensated for their NIL, or professional athletes making big salaries – Swinney doesn’t believe what they’re being paid gives people the right to attack and demean “someone’s humanity.”
“I don’t care if they are pro athletes. I don’t care if it’s a pro athlete. I still don’t think it’s acceptable to destroy people,” Swinney said. “People make a living by just attacking people. It’s sad, and I don’t think that’s OK. I don’t care if it’s Trevor Lawrence playing for the Jaguars right now. I don’t care what he’s paid, man. You’re still human beings, and I still think there’s a way to have fair criticism without completely demeaning someone’s humanity, which is now the click-bait society that we live in, and it’s acceptable. I think that’s sad.”
Added Swinney: “The adults have left the building in this country.”
“I don’t participate in it. I think if you’re miserable, it’s your own fault,” he said. “I stay away from that crap. I don’t deal with it. I stay away from it.”
