The NFL trade deadline has passed, and Hunter Renfrow remains with the Las Vegas Raiders despite speculation that he could be dealt by Tuesday’s deadline.
Although Renfrow didn’t end up getting moved, one team reportedly came close to acquiring the former Clemson star receiver.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported the Raiders and New Orleans Saints got really close to a Renfrow trade.
Ultimately, though, the Raiders didn’t make any trades prior to Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline.
“The only one I thought might happen was Hunter Renfrow going to the Saints,” Rapoport said. “Just so much contractual stuff that they had to work out, who was going to pay his salary… In the end, just did not end up happening.”
Had that trade went down, Renfrow would have been reunited with Derek Carr, the longtime Raiders quarterback who’s now in his first season with the Saints.
A 2019 fifth-round pick of the Raiders, Renfrow signed a two-year, $32 million contract extension in June 2022 that includes $21 million in guaranteed money and keeps him under contract through the 2024 season.
Renfrow was highly productive across his first three seasons with the Raiders, tallying 208 receptions for 2,299 yards and 15 touchdowns, including 103 catches for 1,038 yards and nine scores during his career 2021 season that saw him earn Pro Bowl honors.
However, after Josh McDaniels took over as the Raiders’ head coach in 2022, Renfrow recorded just 36 receptions for 330 yards and two touchdowns last season while being limited to 10 games due to injuries.
Renfrow’s role in McDaniels’ offense this season has been very limited, as he’s been targeted only 16 total times across eight games. He has just 10 catches for 92 yards.
One person baffled by Renfrow’s lack of involvement in the Raiders’ offense is former Heisman Trophy winner and current ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III, as you can see below:
I said it before and will say it again, WHAT IN THE WORLD IS JOSH MCDANIELS DOING WITH HUNTER RENFROW? You are telling me you can’t find a place for him in your offense? The same offense that Wes Welker, Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman thrived in out of the slot. How Sway?
