Swinney on if Tyler from Spartanburg Gave Tigers Chip on Shoulder

After Dabo Swinney received criticism during his radio show this week, Swinney’s team seemed to come out with its collective hair on fire in Saturday’s game against Notre Dame.

Clemson played like a fired-up group in its 31-23 victory over the 12th-ranked Fighting Irish at Death Valley, but Swinney says the much-publicized radio show exchange with “Tyler of Spartanburg” didn’t affect how his team performed in the important win that snapped a two-game losing skid for the Tigers.

Swinney was asked during his postgame press conference if the call from Tyler, who questioned Swinney and his program, gave the Tigers (5-4) a chip on their shoulder and added motivation or determination against Notre Dame (7-3).

“No, that had nothing to do with it,” Swinney said. “These guys, they want to win.”

Swinney fired back at Tyler in the epic rant on Monday night, with Swinney defending himself and what he’s accomplished at Clemson.

But on Saturday, Swinney said regarding Tyler, “I’m sure that guy’s a great guy.”

“I’m sure he’s a great guy, and we all do things that sometimes we regret or say things that we probably shouldn’t say in a moment,” Swinney said. “We’ve all done that. I certainly have as well. But no, I don’t think that had anything to do with our team at all.”
