Following a three-and-out forced by Clemson’s defense and then a 15-yard punt return from former walk-on Hamp Greene, the Tigers’ offense took over at Notre Dame’s 41-yard line, down by a field goal midway through the first quarter.
It didn’t take long for Phil Mafah to put Clemson ahead with a quick strike, one play after Greene’s punt return.
The junior running back showcased his speed, bursting untouched into the end zone for a 41-yard touchdown run that gave the Tigers a 7-3 lead with 6:57 left in the opening frame.
It was Mafah’s seventh rushing touchdown of the year.
