Klubnik’s Fighting Spirit Takes Down Fighting Irish

CLEMSON — Cade Klubnik showed up when the Clemson Tigers needed him the most.

After back-to-back losses on the road, Clemson brought its A-game to Memorial Stadium. Taking down No. 12 Notre Dame, 31-23, was made possible by the leadership the Tigers’ starting quarterback displayed.

Prior to the noon kickoff, there was speculation that Klubnik wouldn’t play against the Irish. He was limited in practice throughout the week, but his performance on the field Saturday had no limits.

Battling through a lower leg injury, Klubnik played a solid football game. His one interception was the result of a dropped pass, and he avoided mistakes otherwise.

Klubnik did not shy away from the “best is the standard” mentality that Clemson instills in its players while contributing a 9-yard touchdown pass to true freshman Tyler Brown in the second quarter, and initiating three big completions to Troy Stellato in the third quarter.

Especially with running back Will Shipley out with a concussion, meshing with running back Phil Mafah was key to creating some action on the field. Their trusting dynamic contributed towards Mafah’s 186 rushing yards.

The sophomore made some smart decisions under pressure, one with a successful quick kick at the end of the third quarter. This punt was with his bad leg — another model of Klubnik’s toughness.

Klubnik rose to the challenge and his fighting spirit helped take down the Fighting Irish.
