CLEMSON – The complexion of Clemson’s 2023 season entirely flipped on its head Saturday when the undermanned Tigers took down No. 12 Notre Dame.
Instead of talking about a 4-5 team that has a strong chance of missing a bow game, we’re discussing a group that delivered their best performance but still only played one good half.
Now 5-4, Clemson turns their fangs towards Georgia Tech as they travel to Death Valley. The Tigers have a chance to start a new win streak, and here’s the Yellow Jackets’ Achilles heel to be exposed.
Rely on the rising run game
The Tigers finally showed what they can do on the ground against the Irish, a very impressive defense. This week’s assignment is very different.
Georgia Tech gives up 220 rushing yards per game and over two touchdowns on the ground. For a team that just man-handled Notre Dame, this can and should be a physical domination for Clemson.
Bowling Green rushed for 175 yards and three scores against Georgia Tech. Ole Miss ran for 299 yards and five touchdowns.
The Tigers just put 176 yards and two scoured on the Irish. In other words, those numbers should be matched or topped in Death Valley Saturday.
With the rise of Phil Mafah and the likely return of Will Shipley in the backfield, Clemson has two fresh running backs to barrel over the Yellow Jackets.
Mix in the possibility Collin Sadler is back in the lineup and Tristan Leigh gets to move back to right guard where he was so dominant against NC State and the big picture keeps getting prettier.
Get an early lead with physicality, then let this championship-level Tigers defense pin their ears back. All that’s left is to execute, and Clemson can put a stamp on their run game Saturday.
