CLEMSON — After a one-week hiatus, Clemson Tigers star Will Shipley stepped back onto the field and made “Ship Happen” in his team’s 42-21 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The Tigers were without their starting running back against Notre Dame, following a blow to the head/neck area during Clemson’s loss against NC State. Shipley sat out with a concussion, and let fellow running back Phil Mafah take the reins.
The junior’s return was a bold one, and it was clear his injury didn’t rattle him, based on his well-executed performance. Shipley finished the game with 11 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown. He also added three catches for 30 yards, something offensive coordinator Garrett Riley is asking more of out of his backs.
Late in the second quarter, Shipley barreled into the end zone with a 32-yard rushing touchdown. This feat not only brought the Tigers to a more drastic lead against the Yellow Jackets, but made the running back the eighth player in school history to rush for 30 career touchdowns.
Opening up the second half, Shipley received a head shot, and it didn’t evoke a penalty call. He went to the sideline for the rest of the drive, but it wouldn’t keep him out long. Shipley returned and continued to create traction to help seal the Tigers’ dominant victory.
