Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney announced Sunday evening that his team suffered another season-ending injury.
Backup tight end Sage Ennis tore his ACL in Saturday’s win over Georgia Tech, and Swinney called it a “big loss” for the Tigers.
Though Ennis recorded only three receptions for 52 yards this season, Swinney noted that the redshirt junior has contributed in ways that don’t necessarily always show up on the stat sheet, including being one of Clemson’s “most physical guys” and making “a lot of big blocks.”
On Monday, one of the teammates who lined up next to Ennis — starting right tackle Blake Miller — met with the media and commented on the Tigers losing Ennis to injury.
“I think the thing that’s great about us is we have depth at all positions,” Miller said. “So, next man up.”
With Ennis out, redshirt freshman Josh Sapp moves up the depth chart as Clemson’s No. 2 tight end behind Jake Briningstool. Swinney mentioned Sunday that true freshmen Olsen Patt-Henry and Markus Dixon will also be in the mix.
Miller, a sophomore who’s started all 24 career games he’s played in at Clemson, doesn’t believe there will be a “huge drop-off” with the guys who are now tasked with filling the void left by Ennis.
“I mean, Sage is great in the run and pass game, and I think Brinny (Briningstool) is also great in the run and pass game. We’ve got Josh Sapp, who’s good in the run and pass game. We got Olsen, who’s good in the run and pass game,” Miller said.
“So, I don’t expect to see a super, super huge drop-off. I think that we’ll be OK, and like I said, next man up. I feel like all those guys prepare as well, and I think they do a great job and practicing next to them, I don’t think it’s any different. I think they just all have to lock in and know what they’re doing.”
