CLEMSON – Military Appreciation Day is one of the most important days for the Clemson Tigers every year. It’s always the day the purple uniforms come out and there’s many traditions that are remembered on that day.
Every year, one Tiger takes the American flag and goes down the hill first. Defensive end TJ Parker had the honor to do so Saturday. His father, Sgt. Tommy Parker, was honored during the game and TJ Parker talked about how it all came to fruition.
“I know the video crew and Ross (Taylor) and everybody, they hit me up saying ‘hey, would you like to carry the flag down the hill’ and I was like of course. Who would say no to that, you know what I mean? That’s a great honor to have,” Parker said.
The freshman said he and the video team worked together on a project in front of the scoreboard, where he talked about his father and what he meant to him. Parker said it was “a cool experience all around” to have that moment.
It’s emotional to take the flag and sprint down the hill. Parker made the trip smoothly and waved the Stars and Stripes around with honor. Given his relationship he has with his father, Parker talked about what he was feeling in the moment.
“It’s always a great time to talk about my dad. I always looked at him as a superhero when it came to him being in the military as a kid. It eas great to have that special moment with him,” Parker said.
It’s been a special year for Parker, who has become a key piece in the Clemson defensive line rotation. That moment Saturday will stick with him for a long time, and one that he’ll carry with honor.
