Swinney has Several Reasons to Buy Stock in Clemson

CLEMSON — Just a few moments after beating Notre Dame on Nov. 4, Dabo Swinney told ESPN’s Molly McGrath that if Clemson was a stock, “you better buy all you can freakin’ buy right now!”

Since the Notre Dame win, the Tigers easily defeated a Georgia Tech team that has won three of its last four games, while also handling Drake Maye and the UNC offense. The Irish and Tar Heels were both ranked opponents coming into Death Valley.

Clemson, ranked No. 24 in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings, can close the regular season with a four-game win streak if it can go into Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia on Saturday night and beat archrival South Carolina the same way it has its last three opponents.

After losing back-to-back games to Miami and NC State at the end of October, many left the Tigers for dead in 2023. However, Swinney did not. He still felt his young squad had an opportunity to be a good football team if they could just stop beating themselves.

“We have a really talented roster. I love our quarterback,” Clemson’s head coach said. “We love the young talent we have.”

Clemson’s young talent has been a big reason behind the Tigers’ resurgence. On offense, the Tigers are getting major contributions from freshmen such as wide receiver Tyler Brown, tight end Josh Sapp and offensive linemen Harris Sewell and Collin Sadler.

On defense, it has been freshmen like defensive tackle Peter Woods, defensive end TJ Parker, safety Khalil Barnes, safety Kylon Griffin and corners Aveion Terrell and Shelton Lewis.

Swinney added there are many reasons why he feels Clemson will be back in the national championship picture next season.

Besides the youth movement, the Tigers have also seen steady improvement out of quarterback Cade Klubnik and a running game that has averaged 229.3 during their three-game win streak.

Clemson (7-4) has also stopped turning the football over at an alarming rate and has forced 10 turnovers in the last three outings, while committing just five. The Tigers are 7-0 this year when they win the turnover battle.

“We have been in position to win every single game this year,” Swinney said. “Hopefully, this will be the one year in my career that we lead the world in turnovers.”

Swinney feels if they can avoid the turnovers and continue to develop the young players that have really shown signs of what they can be, while continuing to play with the same type of effort, toughness, and physicality they have played with all year, then he feels Clemson will be right back in the national championship picture, again.

“I think we have another great recruiting class coming. I think it is three really good ones in a row,” Swinney said. “There are a lot of reasons for that.”
