Trevor Lawrence helped lead the Jacksonville Jaguars to a big divisional victory on Sunday.
The former Clemson quarterback passed for 364 yards and a touchdown, and ran for another score, as Jacksonville edged the Houston Texans 24-21 in Houston.
The Jaguars (8-3) took a two-game lead in the AFC South over Houston (6-5), coming out on top in Sunday’s game when Matt Ammendola’s 58-yard field goal try doinked off the crossbar with 34 seconds remaining.
“It’s huge,” Lawrence said of the win. “This is a really good football team. They’re playing really well. They’re a hot team right now. They’re playing great, and we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game. We knew it was going to be a four-quarter fight till the end, and it was… So, hats off to them. They’re a great team, and the way they’re playing, we might end up seeing them again. So, all the respect to them, but this was a huge win. They beat us at our place earlier in the season. They’re on our heels in the division, and this was a chance for us to separate ourselves a little bit.”
Lawrence completed 23 of his 38 passes and his 364 passing yards mark a season high.
The 2021 No. 1 overall pick scored on a 1-yard rushing touchdown that gave Jacksonville a 10-0 lead in the second quarter. Lawrence later hit Calvin Ridley for a 1-yard touchdown pass, and then connected with Ridley again for an ensuing two-point conversion that put the Jags ahead 21-14 with around 4:30 left in the third quarter.
Lawrence and the Jags have now won two straight games following a blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Nov. 12.
“We’re getting better every week, and we’re still leaving a lot of stuff out there,” Lawrence said of his offense. “We’ve got to play cleaner. Too many penalties, too many mistakes all the way around, myself included. We gotta clean it up, but we’re getting better every week.
“You’re seeing the explosiveness start to come alive in our offense, and we’ve got to keep doing that. That’s helping us the last two weeks. We’ve found explosives, we’ve moved the ball, thrown it all over the place, running the ball great, and that’s kind of the key obviously. But we’ve just got to keep getting better. We gotta take it one week at a time. This is a big win today, though.”
The Jags return to action when they host the Cincinnati Bengals on “Monday Night Football” in Week 13 (Monday, Dec. 4).
