Bengals DC Not Buying This Perception of Lawrence

Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo is not underestimating Trevor Lawrence heading into Monday night’s game between the Bengals and Lawrence’s Jacksonville Jaguars.

There’s been some perception of Lawrence as a one-read-and-run type of quarterback, with NFL defenders Nick Bosa and Arden Key saying in recent weeks that Lawrence struggles after his first read.

However, Anarumo apparently doesn’t agree with that perception, as he indicated on the Up & Adams show with Kay Adams when asked about the comments from Bosa and Key.

“No, I think that’s a little bit of an underestimation in my view,” Anarumo said. “I mean, I see the guy work full field reads and get the ball out on time. I just think what happens with him is he’s such a great athlete that if there is an opportunity for him to run and is not great rush lanes, then he takes it, which I don’t fault him on at all. So, watch what he can do with his legs. But no, I’ve seen him make the reads, and we have great respect for him.”

Lawrence has thrown for 2,746 yards and 12 touchdowns with seven interceptions this season while rushing for 240 yards and three more scores on the ground. The former Clemson star has led the Jags to an 8-3 record and two-game lead in the AFC South division to this point.

Anarumo is well aware of the challenges Lawrence will present for the Bengals’ defense when they match up on Monday Night Football (8:15 p.m., ABC/ESPN).

“His arm is really, really strong, he can make all the throws and as I mentioned, he’s a terrific athlete,” Anarumo said.
