Move over Clemson Football, Basketball Takes Center Stage

CLEMSON — It’s no secret football gets most of the attention at Clemson, and understandably so.

The Clemson Football program has won three national championships over the years, to go along with 27 conference titles. Since Dabo Swinney took over the program in 2008, Clemson is one of the two best programs in the country.

One can only imagine what it is like to be a men’s basketball player at Clemson. In most years, it’s usually mid-January before Clemson fans even noticed the basketball team.

“I think in general, because of how big football is, it seems like people don’t know much about basketball or what we are doing,” Clemson post player PJ Hall said.

They do now.

Thanks to Tuesday’s win at No. 23 Alabama, everyone is starting to pay attention to the Clemson basketball team, including the football team. The Tigers have won their first six games for the first time since 2008.

Hall says fellow students are telling him when the next game is, like next Wednesday’s home clash against the undefeated South Carolina Gamecocks.

“I think in general people do (know what we are doing), but football is such a big deal here,” Hall said. “The fans do a great job keeping up with us. Obviously, this year we started off very strong, so they are really paying attention now and it is definitely cool.”

What’s cool is how the Tigers are playing. In three of their six wins, they rallied from double digit or late second half deficits. They trailed by as many as nine points on multiple occasions in the second half against UAB in the Ashville Championship, but they fought back for a 77-76 victory.

Clemson trailed by as many as 18 points against Davidson before rallying for a 68-65 win in the Ashville Championship Game. Then on Tuesday, they used a 13-0 run to rally from seven points down in the second half to take down Alabama.

The win over the Crimson Tide marked the first time in 20 games they lost at home, and it was just the second time in school history Clemson recorded a non-conference-road win over a ranked opponent.

The Tigers also dominated Boise State in the second half to get a win over a team that has made it to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two years.

“Going into that Alabama game, we were really confident,” Hall said. “In general, our confidence is high, and it has been like that for a while, so we are very comfortable and confident as we go into more non-conference games.”

Clemson (6-0) will actually open ACC play this Sunday when they visit Pittsburgh. The Tigers are the last undefeated team, overall, in the league.

“You have to be confident and not cocky,” Clemson guard Joe Girard said. “There is a difference between the two. When you have a team full of confident guys, like PJ said, it comes from preparation and all that kind of stuff, usually your success comes on the court.

“There is a big difference between the two. You can get in trouble when you start getting cocky and I think that is what Coach is trying to prepare us with right now. Not to get complacent, but at the same time stay confident. Know that we are a pretty good team, but at any moment we can lose. You have to stay levelheaded, but make sure you stay confident.”
