ESPN published an article listing the best value deals for every NFL team (subscription required).
ESPN’s Aaron Schatz picked what he sees as the most valuable contract on each roster based on the amount of value that team is getting for how much it’s paying.
For the Baltimore Ravens, Schatz pegged former Clemson offensive lineman John Simpson as the team’s best value deal.
The 26-year-old Simpson’s remaining contract (which expires after the 2023 season) has only a $1 million cap hit (0.5% of cap), per the ESPN article.
“Simpson was a fourth-round pick of the Raiders and was their 2021 starter at left guard. However, he was benched two games into the 2022 season and eventually cut near the end of the season,” Schatz wrote. “The Ravens picked him up on the practice squad and this season he won a camp battle at left guard over Ben Cleveland and Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu.
“Simpson has started all 12 games for the Ravens, and it’s not easy to find a starting guard out there for a million bucks. He has been pretty good, too. While he has a below-average run block win rate (66.1%), he is tied for 14th among all guards with a pass block win rate of 93.7%. Simpson will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.”
At Clemson, Simpson played both guard positions for the Tigers in 2017 before earning a starting role. He helped Clemson post a 29-1 record during his two seasons as a full-time starter.
The North Charleston, S.C., native played 2,047 snaps over 50 games (29 starts) in his career as a Tiger (2016-19). He earned consensus All-America status in 2019.
