A former Clemson standout was traded on Wednesday.
The New York Mets announced they have acquired former Tiger lefthanded pitcher Ryan Ammons and cash considerations from the Boston Red Sox for righthander Justin Slaten, who was selected by the Mets from the Texas Rangers in Wednesday’s Rule 5 Draft.
Ammons was drafted by the Red Sox in the 10th round (No. 298 overall pick) of the 2023 MLB Draft.
The 22-year-old pitched 51.2 innings over 47 appearances (two starts) and four seasons at Clemson from 2020-23. He had a 3-2 record, 13 saves and a 4.35 ERA while allowing 41 hits (.211 opponents’ batting average) and 28 walks with 75 strikeouts. He had a 13.06 strikeouts-per-nine-innings-pitched mark in his career.
Ammons became the Tigers’ closer in 2022, then was a starter to begin the 2023 season, but suffered an injury that set him back. He then returned to the back end of the bullpen in 2023.
LHP Ryan Ammons and cash considerations have been acquired from Boston in exchange for RHP Justin Slaten.
