Clemson picked up a verbal pledge this week from a talented local prospect.
Greer (S.C.) High School class of 2024 wide receiver Chase Byrd committed to the Tigers on Monday as a preferred walk-on.
He chose Dabo Swinney’s program over a number of other offers, including schools such as Maryland, Columbia and Yale.
“It was a very long decision process, but with lots of conversations and prayers, I felt Clemson was home for me,” Byrd told The Clemson Insider. “The visit was great. Talking to the coaches and just seeing the atmosphere at Clemson is something else. I knew I wanted to be a part of something special.”
Byrd made a recruiting visit to Clemson for the North Carolina game on Nov. 18 – after which he announced a PWO offer from the Tigers.
“Getting that offer from Clemson felt great,” he said. “Knowing I would be able to play at an elite school in my hometown with all my friends and family around made it even more special. A lot of people have told me I wouldn’t make it to this level and taking a PWO isn’t smart. I’ve worked all my life to earn a spot on a football field, I never looked at a PWO bad but just a reason to work harder for what I want.
“I made the decision Clemson was the place for me after talking to other commits and players on the team. They embraced me and wanted me to be a part of what they’re trying to accomplish.”
Byrd had a strong senior season this year, recording 43 receptions, 684 yards, 11 touchdowns and 1,190 all-purpose yards. The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder also posted two interceptions, six solo tackles and three tackles for loss, all in only one game on defense.
Byrd explained what the Tigers like about him as a receiver, based on what he’s heard from the coaching staff.
“They love how I go and get the ball,” he said. “I make big plays when they’re crucial. They love my work ethic and how I can make players miss in open field.”
The chance to play at Clemson is a thrill for Byrd, who has grown up in a family full of Tigers.
“Lots of family members graduated from Clemson, so I was born into a big Clemson family,” he said. “I went to games with my friends growing up, which was very fun, but I never thought I would one day be a Tiger.”
Byrd can’t wait to get on campus for good and begin his Clemson career.
“I am fortunate enough that I will be graduating early and enrolling Jan. 7,” he said. “I’m excited to get on campus early and get straight to work. I’ve already talked to my roommate, (class of 2024 DE commit) Adam Kissayi, and we’re both excited to jump right into training.”
Byrd collected 2-AAAA All-Region honors this year and was also selected to play in the North-South All-Star Game.
